“Stand Up Planet ,” the two-part documentary that utilizes the power of comedy for change, hits television screens across the US this Wednesday, May 14 at 7 pm ET / 6 pm CT on Pivot and LinkTV. The documentary will also broadcast at 9 pm PT on Los Angeles’s KCET and later this month on India’s NDTV Prime.
The documentary specials are just one aspect of “Stand Up Planet,” a transmedia project that explores the ways in which humor can shed new light on the challenges that people face around the world, provoke discussion, and bring rarely-heard voices to the public.
Center Creative Director Caty Borum Chattoo, an executive producer for “Stand Up Planet,” said in an interview last month that the project was designed to help people “follow the entertainment into the deeper social issues” though “creating material that moves from TV and screen to online engagement.”
The project’s focus on engagement made “Stand Up Planet” the perfect candidate for Pivot , Participant Media’s new cable network for millennials. With the tagline, “It’s your turn,” Pivot aims to promote social engagement and participation among young people through programming that is “all about changing things up."
Pivot’s original programs include “TakePart Live,” a news show structured around audience participation, and “Jersey Strong,” a “docu-soap” that follows the struggles of two unconventional Newark couples. The network also airs ground-breaking fan favorites like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Little Mosque on the Prairie.”
Pivot’s EVP of Marketing and Scheduling Kent Rees even called “Stand Up Planet” a “quintessential program for Pivot ” because “it sheds light on truly important, timely and global issues but speaks to those topics in a way that brings us all together.” He expressed the hope that the “Stand Up Planet” documentary “will spark conversation and inspire viewers to take action around this issue.”
